Case Studies
Results 1
Situation:
Our client was facing the prospect of 15 to 20% increases in healthcare costs on an annual basis. At the same time, they were feeling tremendous pressure to maintain tight control over their labor and associated healthcare costs, in order to effectively contend with international competitors.
Strategy:
Chatham provided the resources and data to help our client establish a "win-win" partnership with their employees. The program was tailored to meet their company's specific healthcare needs and allowed them to incorporate a self-funded plan in conjunction with health risk assessments and wellness initiatives.
Outcome:
Our client feels that our program is one of their most successful operational strategies to date, and the results speak for themselves. Their health benefit expenses have been flat for 3 years while their employees have become healthier and more productive.
Also, they were presented with the national manufacturing award from their industry association for "most innovative and effective new employee benefit".

Situation:
Our client is a family-owned furniture retailer with 54 locations scattered over 3 Mid-Atlantic States. They were experiencing double-digit increases in health plan costs with no relief in sight.
Strategy:
Two years ago, we helped our client establish a health management plan to encourage and support employees' efforts to proactively address their health conditions. Chatham played an integral role in the process and provided our client with the resources necessary to effectively administer and monitor the program. We were able to educate their employees on the importance of their involvement in not only protecting their own health, but also the viability of their employer-sponsored health plan. Utilizing a HIPAA compliant process, a healthy life plan was generated to address the unique issues that each individual faced and how he or she could address them using local community services. An incentive system rewarding those individuals who compliantly followed their monthly plan was implemented.
Outcome:
The results for the wellness program were overwhelming: claims costs for program participants have grown less than 2% each year while medical inflation in their community has averaged 9%.

Situation:
Annie, an employee of one of our clients, was being treated for diabetes and high blood pressure. Her medications had recently been changed and her out-of-pocket cost was over $230 per month.
Strategy:
We recently helped our client establish an on-site Nurse Practitioner at her office location. With the assistance of the Nurse Practitioner, each of her doctors was contacted and the feasibility of altering her medication to generic drugs was discussed. The Nurse Practitioner received approval from each physician and new prescriptions were written for the employee.
Outcome:
The monthly out-of-pocket cost for Annie decreased from $230 to $66 per month. She was thrilled about the more affordable plan and felt that the company cared enough (through the help of the Nurse Practitioner) to find a healthy solution for her.
The impact of this one change on the company's part was over $13,000 in cost savings per year. The return on investment for initiating the on-site clinic is 3 to 1 and rising. |
